The no-makeup makeup of last season’s runways is well and truly over, enter this season’s looks that are all things glitter. 2016 has seen the tragic deaths of beauty and fashion icons, David Bowie and Prince and what better way to pay homage then to add a little sophisticated sparkle back into the world of beauty.
Glitter has transformed from a festival and fancy-dress essential to a runway staple. Make-up artist, Wendy Rowe, for Burberry AW16, applied glitter to the outer corners of the eye and sprinkled across the cheeks as a tribute to the late Ziggy Stardust. Elle Fanning was spotted sporting a similar glitter look at the Saint Laurent show, kick-starting the popular trend for glitter tears. First seen on the Vogue Paris October cover donned by the sultry Christy Turlington and then digital influencer Jeffree Star who sported dramatic, drag-inspired glitter tears in a recent tutorial, inspiring a whole new Instagram trend.
The trend doesn’t stop there, at Vionnet model’s lips were lined in gold sparkly liner while glitter queen and make-up artist, Pat McGrath worked her bedazzling magic for Atelier Versace; creating a deep burgundy pout with glitter pressed over the top to tie in with the colours of the couture gowns, switching it up from the traditional nude lip and smokey eye often found on Donatella Versace herself. McGrath used her own Pat McGrath Lust 004 Lip Kit to create this dramatic look on Bella Hadid.
The glitter eyebrow was given the Gigi stamp of approval over at Giambattista Valli. A thin, precise line of silver glitter was placed under the brow to highlight the brow bone, very simple to recreate and surprisingly wearable. “You don’t really notice the glitter until the model turns and you see the arch of her eyebrows,” said Val Garland, the artist behind the look.
If silver is your sheen of choice, try a silver leafed brow bone highlight, sported by the models at Holly Fulton. In Fulton’s own words, “what is more fun than sparkle?”
For those less adventurous, the Tommy Hilfiger SS16 models sported subtle glimmering looks created by Pat McGrath dubbed ‘Tommy’s Star-spangled Princesses’. Models wore gold glitter across the eyelid to create a halo of light around the eye. This look is perfect for those who want to dip their toes into the trend but don’t want to fully commit to the metallic madness.
David Bowie and Prince broke boundaries in many ways and without their legacy, who knows how different beauty could be? Their lasting legacies will be the trail of glitter they left in many people’s lives. What better beauty trend is there to homage to the late and great?
So, why no lift the mood and hid those Monday morning dark circles, with a sprinkle of glitter.
