If you’re a university student then it’s that time of year when for one night only, we set aside our cans of red stripe and sequinned boob tubes and don our best frocks for our annual society Christmas balls. Mine happened to be early on in the festive period this year, perfect timing for me to try out some new makeup so you don’t have to! Of course, this makeup is not exclusive for balls but is perfect for any festive get together and includes some of my favourite products for long wearing, photo slaying, full glam event makeup. My dress was a sparkly black number which gave me a lot of freedom to play with colour and really accessorise using beauty products. One of my favourite things about Christmas is the classic red lip and sparkly eye combo we all know and love. Not wanting to stray from tradition, I rocked this look in full force. I also wore my hair up with a few face-framing pieces of hair pulled down so I could let the makeup do all the talking.
I’m not a lover of full coverage on a daily basis and only whip out foundation for nights out or events. To achieve a fully flawless base, I used my favourite primer Benefit Dr Feelgood mattifying balm pressed into my T-Zone to effortlessly smooth the appearance of my larger than life pores. My foundation of choice for full coverage is the wonderful Hourglass Vanish foundation stick, mine is in the shade ‘Ecru’ and is best applied to the face straight from the stick and then bounced into the skin using a damp Real Techniques sponge. For concealer, I used Soap and Glory’s Kick-Ass Concealer (the peachy shade) to colour correct under my eyes and then Too Faced ‘Born This Way’ to conceal and highlight (I won’t be repurchasing this – it creases far too quickly under my eyes). To set all of this in place, I used the powder in the Soap and Glory concealer kit, paying particular attention to press it into the centre of my face and under my eyes.
Ok, not the most conventional approach for a makeup routine. But, when I know I want to do a bold lip, I always apply it before eyes and cheeks so I can build around it and not go too overboard. I’m a big fan of picking out one feature to make pop and build the rest of the look around this feature. I chose a deep berry red. First, I lined and filled my lips using NYX ‘Cabaret’ Lip Liner. When it comes to a bold lip, I like to really take my time to draw and perfect my lip line and then use concealer to clean up any mistakes. If you find using lip liner difficult, resting your elbow on a solid surface will help and don’t get too close to the mirror. Keep stepping back and looking at your lips in comparison to the rest of your face so you don’t go over board. I’ve been waiting for the perfect time to use this lipstick, it was the Ciate Olivia Palermo collection lipstick in Velveteen and it is the most beautiful, rich and luscious red there is. It’s truly festive and Christmassy without being at all brash.
To begin the eyes, I like to being with the brows to create an overall frame for an eye look, my favourite brow products for soft fluffy brows right now is the Soap and Glory Archery DIY Brow Bar. I used the wax on a spooley brush to push all my brow hairs upwards and then used the blonde colour through the front and dark colour to define the tail on my eyebrow. The eye look was created around the Soap and Glory ‘She’s a Natural’ face palette. To prime the eyes, I used the Smashbox 24-hour eye primer (the best in my opinion) and then set this with ‘Cafe Away’ from the face palette. I then used ‘Culture Choc’ in the crease and under the last line to add some subtle definition. To buff out this colour, I took the bronzer on a fluffy brush to diffuse the edges and create a soft halo around the eye. The stand out shade in this palette is ‘Choccy’, this shade is very similar to a pressed pigment or glitter and is best applied with fingers. I asked this onto my lid to deepen the overall look and add some shimmer. In the centre of the lid, I used one of my favourite ever eye products: Helen E Cosmetics Shimmer Pigment in 13, if you have blue eyes you NEED this colour. I don’t know what is in this little pot of joy but it make my eye colour pop and it’s so affordable! To finish off, I smudged some black shadow into my lash line, applied some mascara and popped on my trusty Ardell Whispie Lashes.
Finally, it was time to make my egg head transform into a slightly more chiselled egg. Nars Talia will forever be my contour of choice, I used this on a tapered contour brush along my cheekbones, jawline and down the sides of my nose. I bronzed with Soap and Glory Solar Powder and then applied their blush in ‘Rosy Chic’. For that festive highlight, I hit the high points of my face with the Solstice Palette from Sleek. Finally, I drowned my face in Urban Decay De-Slick setting spray to make sure my hard work wasn’t going anywhere.
That was my finished look, I hope it provided you with some festive inspiration or even with some stocking fillers for the beauty obsessed ones in your life? Make sure you’re following me on Instagram to keep up with my daily makeup looks and end of term antics!
